The Ministry of Health is developing a Strategic and Action Plan for Public Health. The plan will focus on the work of the public health sector and also demonstrate how public health approaches can be used throughout the health sector to achieve population health gain and reduce inequalities in health. This discussion document is part of that process.
The Strategic and Action Plan for Public Health is being developed collaboratively with the public health sector. The process to date has actively involved both government and non-government providers and the research community alongside policy makers and planners in the Ministry. Information has been gathered from many sources and collated into this discussion document.
The Strategic and Action Plan for Public Health will set out a long-term vision for public health and how to achieve this. Fundamental principles include a population health approach and consideration of the wider determinants of health. A coherent strategic approach for public health is essential to achieve population health gain in New Zealand.
Development of the Strategic and Action Plan for Public Health builds on previous public health strategic plans, to provide a strategic framework and direction for pubic health action. Responses to the discussion document will be used to develop a working draft of the Strategic and Action Plan. We welcome your input into this important process. Note that there will be oppportunity for further input into the Plan before it is finalised.
