Restricting Access to Means of Suicide in New Zealand

A Report Prepared for the Ministry of Health on Methods of Suicide in New Zealand 1977 - 1996

The aims of this report are to provide a summary of a series of issues relating to methods of suicide and the feasibility of suicide prevention through restricting access to methods of suicide.

Trends in suicide methods are examined for both the total population and for the population of young people aged 15-24 years. A brief summary of the major findings of the international literature on method restriction is provided and the extent to which these findings may apply, and be adapted, to the New Zealand context is discussed.

Against this background, the report makes a series of recommendations for 'best practice' approaches to restricting access to means of suicide that might be feasible in New Zealand.

This summary provides a brief review of the key information contained in the report. Suicide trends and suicide methods are discussed for, firstly, the total population of people of all ages, and secondly, for the population of young people aged 15-24 years.
