Kapiti District Health and Disability Report and PlanDate of publication: August 2000
The Kapiti District Health and Disability Report and Plan is presented to the Minister of Health by the Management Committee of the Porirua Kapiti Healthlinks Project, on behalf of the people of the Kapiti District. It brings together plans and recommendations to improve health and disability outcomes for people living on the Kapiti Coast, informed by the outcomes people experience, improvements providers have considered and what local people judge to be the highest priorities.
Key issues identified align strongly with the principles and priorities in the draft New Zealand Health Strategy. Achieving very good health and wellbeing requires a greater improvement in the health status of those people currently disadvantaged. The principles of collaborative health promotion, ensuring timely and equitable access to services regardless of ability to pay, and acknowledging the special relationship between tangata whenua and the Crown, are all reflected in this plan.
A hallmark of this project has been its collaborative approach: in the partnership between central government, local government, tangata whenua and other community members, as well as in recognising and addressing the intersectoral factors that affect health outcomes. By creating opportunities for different groups or providers, voluntary agencies, the community and the funder to work together, the project has already initiated new ways of operating.
The Management Committee asks the Minister to note the actions agreed with providers, the Health Funding Authority, and other organisations.
On behalf of people in Kapiti, the Management Committee urges the Minister to consider and act on the recommendations to improve health and disability outcomes for people in Kapiti.
