Whaia Te whanaungatanga: Oranga whānau: The Wellbeing of whānau: A Background Paper

Date of publication: May 1998

This paper is the last in a series of papers on public health issues. The paper is part of He Kakano Oranga’s work programme which fell out of He Matariki: A Strategic Plan for Māori Public Health. The paper incorporates the results of consultation from seven hui held nation-wide and thirty written submissions from a range of Māori and non-Māori professional and non-professional organisations and some groups and individuals.

The paper reconfirms the important of an inclusive whānau focused model as opposed to exclusive iwi models. The importance of whānau in increasing Māori health gain is emphasised. The paper provides an overview of Māori public health priorities for whānau collectively and for individual members of whānau. It describes demographic and Māori/iwi issues which impact on whānau health and well-being. It also identifies existing Māori initiatives.

The paper describes barriers of access for Māori and the public health programme issues to address those barriers and advance whānau health gain. In particular, it looks at the current situation and future opportunities inherent in integrated/co-ordinated care models for Māori.

The whānau paper is due for printing prior to June this year and will be used as a basis for policy advice to the Minister and to guide in programme development.
