This discussion document reflects the Government’s aims to improve the population health status of New Zealanders and reduce inequalities in health status, particularly between Maori and Pacific peoples and other New Zealanders. The document provides an overarching framework within which the health sector can develop.

The New Zealand Health Strategy identifies fundamental principles which should be reflected across the sector. Any new strategies to be developed should reflect these seven principles.

The document highlights 12 health objectives and service priority areas for the health sector, the Ministry of Health and District Health Boards to focus upon for immediate action.

The discussion document is summarised in a pamphlet which is available in English, Samoan, Cook Island Maori, Tongan and Niuean. A Braille version of the full discussion document is being produced.

The Minister of Health is seeking responses from health care workers, communities, and interested groups or individuals. The Ministry of Health will collect responses, consult on the strategy and report to the Minister in September.

In addition a large number of public meetings were held around the country, details of these are contained within the Discussion Document.
