Canterbury winners at Health Innovation Awards

A scheme devised at Christchurch Hospital for ensuring critically ill patients get the right amount of sedation is among the winners of the New Zealand Health Innovation Awards.

The programme for optimising sedation in patients won the Individual Category of the awards, announced tonight.

A second entry from Christchurch, an energy-saving campaign at Christchurch Hospital, was Highly Commended in the Group Category.

The scheme for optimising sedation was the work of a small team at Christchurch Hospital who drew together clinical and engineering skills to develop and implement a simple standardised method for delivering a satisfactory level of sedation.

They developed a device - the Infuse Rite - which provides a simple means to give patients a combination of drugs in preparation for a stressful procedure.

The Infuse-Rite has become the standard of care in managing sedation. The hospital now has 10 Infuse-Rite(S) that have been used on more than 600 patients for periods ranging from a few hours up to 32 days.

The category award winner receives a cash prize of $8,000.

The energy-saving drive at Christchurch hospital which was highly commended, saved thousands of dollars that are now being used to fund patient care. A formal commitment to energy management at the hospital resulted in a 10% budget saving in a year, worth about $180,000.

The Health Innovation Awards, sponsored by Telecom, were established jointly by ACC and the Ministry of Health to promote innovation in health and rehabilitation and the sharing of good ideas across the health, disability and rehabilitation sector.

The Healthy Housing programme, a scheme to reduce housing-related diseases among families in Housing New Zealand Corporation properties in Auckland and Northland, clinched the Supreme Award.

Earlier this year a team of evaluators and a panel of judges, independent from the Ministry of Health and ACC, assessed the applications and made site visits to scrutinise entries.
