Achieving Health for All People

The Ministry of Health has facilitated the development of Achieving Health for All People: Whakatutuki te oranga hauora mo nga tangata katoa. This plan provides a framework for public health action for the New Zealand Health Strategy.

The New Zealand Health Strategy supports the role of public health and emphasises the importance of taking a population health approach to the improvement of health and the reduction of inequalities. A key theme of Achieving Health for All People is that public health action is not the responsibility of public health services alone, or even of health services as a whole. It is about the organised efforts of society. The purpose of this document is to provide the public health sector with a framework for this approach.

The plan is not in its final form. It has been published as a working document that providers and DHBs will be able to trial over the next few months. It is not envisaged that the messages contained within it will fundamentally change over that period, as they have been well supported by the sector during the consultation. However we will be seeking feedback from users of the document as to how the final plan could be made more useful to their work, where new emphasis is required, and which aspects of the plan could usefully be supported with further resources or tools.

The plan will be reviewed in April/May 2003 and a final version published in June.
