Hospital Throughput 2000/01Date of Publication: December 2002
Hospital Throughput 2000/01 presents information on what inpatient hospital treatment was provided through public funding in 2000/01. The data includes services funded by the Health Funding Authority (HFA) up to 31 December 2000, and the Ministry of Health from 1 January 2001, in both public and private hospitals, and the Accident Rehabilitation and Compensation Insurance Corporation (ACC) in public hospitals only. Information presented is grouped according to Major Diagnostic Category (MDC), Australian National Diagnosis Related Groups (AN-DRGs), total/medical and surgical throughput and health specialty volumes.
This report does not contain any commentary but does contain useful data for someone who might wish to undertake analysis of hospital volumes. This report is the sixth in the series of these annual reports.
Summary information is provided for all New Zealand. This report also provides comparative discharge, length of stay, and percent day case analysis by district health board (DHB) regions, as well as by DHB providers. As such, the report provides a tool for helping DHBs assess the personal health needs of their resident populations, and complements the personal health toolkits and health needs assessment information which has previously been, and will continue to be, supplied to DHBs by the Ministry of Health.
The information presented includes:
- throughput - number of discharges (both raw and adjusted for cost-complexity);
- discharges by age, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic need, admission type, and discharge type;
- inpatient average length of stay;
- percentage of total cases which were admitted and discharged on the same day (day cases);
- maps showing DHB regions with throughput rates significantly different from the national average; and,
- change in throughput from 1998/99 to 1999/00, and 1999/00 to 2000/01.
Pricing information is also provided in this report, and is based on 2000/01 HFA contracted prices with HHSs. However, the prices are only estimates and should be used as indicative only, due to the different inclusion/exclusion criteria used by the Ministry and the HFA for contracting purposes.
