Fact Sheet 2: Outreach Immunisation services

What are outreach immunisation services?
These are services provided in an attempt to immunise those children who have been identified as having missed some or all of their scheduled childhood immunisations. Outreach Immunisation Services are one of an integrated set of strategies aimed at improving immunisation coverage and ensuring that people have access to services that empower them to make informed decisions regarding immunisation.

Who will provide Outreach Immunisation Services?
Contracts have been established with a range of services such as PHOs, Primary care, WellChild/Tamariki Ora, Maori and Pacific providers within most DHBs to provide these services.

How will these services be provided?
There are a range of models of Outreach Immunisation Services with the key objective being to improve immunisation coverage rates for Maori and Pacific children and other priority groups with high rates of vaccine preventable disease and low immunisation coverage.

Outreach immunisation services will offer flexible arrangements for vaccination services i.e. by providing services both in the home or community settings.

How are outreach immunisation services linked to the National Immunisation Register?
The NIR allows for the sharing of information between health care providers to assist with follow up. Outreach providers will be informed when people are overdue for their immunisations. Vaccinators will advise the NIR when immunisations have been given.
