Introduction

The New Zealand Health Monitor: Updated strategic plan contains a detailed design for the integrated programme of health surveys and record linkage studies, collectively called the New Zealand Health Monitor (NZHM), that are managed by Public Health Intelligence.

The NZHM monitors the health status of the population and the main groups within the population, with a particular focus on the personal and social determinants of health, including access to and utilisation of health services, and it therefore contributes to the evaluation of health policy, programmes and services.

By routinely and regularly collecting, analysing, interpreting and disseminating information (collected through population-based surveys and cohort studies) the NZHM answers to two central questions:

How healthy are we?
How healthy is the health system?

The NZHM programme began in 2001, and now with four years experience of successfully managing the health surveys and record linkage studies, Public Health Intelligence is launching this updated strategic plan to 2010.
