Evaluation of Intensive Home Visiting Pilot in Tokoroa / Mangakino and Mangere

Date of publication: November 2004

The Intensive Home Visiting (IHV) Project is a reducing inequalities initiative that seeks to improve the health status of those New Zealanders who are facing significant disadvantage by providing health information, education, support, advocacy and facilitated access to other services.

IHV service was piloted in two sites of identified disadvantage; a rural site in Tokoroa/Mangakino and an urban site within Mangere.

The Ministry of Health developed the IHV services in collaboration with Counties Manukau and Waikato DHBs and worked closely with Tainui MAPO. Lakes DHB became involved when the Tokoroa site expanded to include Mangakino.

CBG Health Research Group was selected to undertake a formative, process and outcome evaluation of the IHV pilot services. The evaluation commenced in both sites in April 2002 and was completed in September 2004.

The aim of the evaluation was to:
  • describe what took place during the development of the new services
  • measure the impact of the IHV pilot services and to determine whether they have or are likely to achieve improved health outcomes for Maori, Pacific and other high needs groups with the poorest health status.

The final evaluation report of the findings (PDF, opens in new window) can be accessed on CBG Health Research Group’s website www.cbg.co.nz
