The Ministry of Health’s Hospital Throughput Report 2002/03 contains statistical information on publicly funded inpatient and daycase medical, surgical and maternity services. These services make up approximately 44% of the publicly funded hospital services provided by DHBs in New Zealand. Not included in this report are hospital based medical and surgical outpatient events including ED attendances, community health services, mental health services, disability health services and public health services.

The report shows that for inpatient and daycase medical and surgical and maternity services over the period 1 July 2002 and 30 June 2003 there were 617,988 people discharged after publicly funded hospital treatment. Of these, 65.4 per cent, or 404,028 were medical discharges; 28.9 per cent, or 178,762, were surgical discharges; and 5.7 per cent, or 35,198 discharges, which were neither specifically medical or surgical.

In total, this represents a small decrease of 0.7 per cent in publicly funded inpatient hospital services in the 2002/03 financial year compared to the previous 12 months, as measured by hospital discharges. However, there were a number of private hospitals, which had not submitted information on publicly funded discharges for 2002/03 at the time this report was compiled. If data for all private hospitals is excluded for both years, there was no change in publicly funded inpatient hospital services between 2001/02 and 2002/03.
