Chatham Islands Focus
Results from the 2002/03 New Zealand Health Survey

Public Health Intelligence Occasional Bulletin No 27

Date of publication: April 2005

HP 4090

The 2002/03 New Zealand Health Survey was the third national survey undertaken by the Ministry of Health to look at the health of New Zealand adults (people aged 15 years and over). Two previous national surveys were undertaken in 1992/93 and 1996/97.

Notably, the 2002/03 survey was the first time ever that people living in the Chatham Islands were invited to take part. A total of 400 Chatham Islands residents (over 70 percent of the eligible population) took part.

Chatham Islands Focus summarises responses given by the Chatham Islands participants and also compares their results with those found for the total New Zealand population.

The report covers areas such as self-reported health status, chronic (long-term) diseases, risk and protective factors for good health, and the use of health services. In addition, the report summarises the opinions of the Chatham Islands participants as to the quality of the health services provided to residents, and includes their suggestions to improve health services provision.
