Developing a Magnet Health Organisation

Date of publication: April 2005

HP 4078

Delivery of optimal health outcomes for New Zealanders creates challenges for health care providers in today’s health care environment. Ongoing recruitment and retention concerns, workforce development issues, competition for the health dollar, high burn out rates and interprofessional discord all impact significantly on a provider’s ability to deliver a quality health service.

The magnet concept offers an innovative approach to the management and delivery of health services. Already tested in the USA and Europe, magnet principles and processes are aimed at excellence of care and optimal patient outcomes.

The purpose of this document is to provide a resource for those health organisations wishing to pursue implementation of magnet principles into their organisation, and/or considering formal magnet recognition.

The processes and tools included are aimed at providing, in the first instance, a framework and guidance to the most senior health professionals and managers within a health organisation to support them in their journey towards implementing magnet principles.
