Renowned health information resource now available across New Zealand

All New Zealand residents now have free access to reliable, up-to-date research evidence on medical interventions from the Cochrane Library.

The Cochrane Library is a collection of regularly updated evidence-based health care databases that can help clinicians and consumers make decisions about appropriate and effective health care. The library brings together in one place research which looks at the effectiveness of different health care treatments and interventions.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer such a valuable resource to New Zealanders,” says Colin Feek, Deputy Director-General, Clinical Services at the Ministry of Health. "No matter where you live in New Zealand, you will be able to access this fantastic database of health information.”

The Cochrane Library contains high quality health care information, including systematic reviews from the Cochrane Collaboration (www.cochrane.org), a UK-registered international charity and the world’s leading producer of systematic reviews. These reviews bring together research on the effects of health care and are considered the gold standard for determining the relative effectiveness of different interventions.

The Library is an internationally renowned collection of seven internet databases of health information, updated quarterly, designed to help health care professionals make treatment decisions and inform patients about the care they receive.

New Zealand Cochrane Fellow, Dr Vanessa Jordon says, " It is an exciting and monumental decision by the Ministry of health and DHBNZ to supply an unbiased and informative source of health intervention information for the general public. This will allow current evidence to be put to the best use in health decision-making by all."

The Cochrane Library can be viewed on the Ministry of Health's website at www.moh.govt.nz/cochranelibrary

or on the New Zealand Guidelines Group website at www.nzgg.org.nz
