Introduction
The Health of Older People Information Strategic Plan – Directions to 2010 and beyond has been developed to support the implementation of the Health of Older People Strategy – Health Sector Action to 2010 to support the positive ageing strategy (Ministry of Health 2002).

Currently, information on older people’s utilisation of health and disability support services is fragmented and incomplete. Challenges arise from both the number and range of providers delivering health and disability support services to older people, as well as from limited investment in some information systems in the past.

The purpose of the Information Strategic Plan is to improve health outcomes for older people by ensuring that access to quality information is available to older people, their family, whanau and carers and health and disability support service providers, funders, planners and policy makers in a timely manner for effective and efficient health decision-making.

District Health Boards are required to implement the Health of Older People Strategy by 2010. Parallel implementation of the Information Strategic Plan by District Health Boards and the Ministry of Health is essential to the successful implementation of the Health of Older People Strategy.
