National Ethics Committee on Assisted Human Reproduction (NECAHR)Annual Report to the Minister of Health for the year ending 31 December 2001
Date of publication: June 2002
The Minister of Health has released the Annual Report of the National Ethics Committee on Assisted Human Reproduction (NECAHR) for the year ended December 2001.
The Committee reviews all research and innovative treatment proposals involving assisted human reproduction and advises the Minister on ethical issues relating to assisted human reproduction. The 10-member committee reviewed 14 new proposals in 2001. Of those 14, one was declined and three were deferred pending further information.
NECAHR also considered two proposals carried over from 2000. One of those was approved, and one declined.
NECAHR reviewed and advised on a number of significant ethical issues relating to proposals that included the use of non-viable embryos and within-family gamete donation. NECAHR also made a start on guidelines for providers of fertility services in the area of preimplantation genetic diagnosis and the donation of already existing embryos for reproductive purposes.
Public feedback is welcome via the NECAHR website (www.moh.govt.nz/necahr).
