Summary

From 2002-2004 the Ministry of Health funded and supported the Complex Carers Group to determine the needs of families in Waitakere City who were providing an intensive level of care for a children and young people with high and complex needs; those with both multiple disabilities; serious ongoing illness and difficult behaviors who require a high level of support. The project was formally evaluated by the Donald Beasley Institute.

The “Evaluation of the Complex Carers Group’ report summarizes a review of the literature related to carers, presents the outcome of detailed questionnaire to carers and makes recommendations for future planning. The report along with the literature review titled "Families Caring for members with High and Complex Needs" is available on www.carers.net.nz.

Since the completion of this pilot a number of initiatives have been undertaken including proceeding with the establishment of a national network of carers of children and young adults (0-25 years) with high and complex needs and the provision of support and information to carers through the Complex Carers Group.
