Summary

This report describes the first six months progress of the evaluation overview of the national Meningococcal B immunisation programme. It is one of a series of reports commissioned by the Ministry of Health to evaluate the Meningococcal B immunisation programme. The evaluation was carried out by CBG health Research Ltd.

The objective of the Meningococcal B programme (the programme) was to vaccinate 90% of children aged 6 weeks to 19 years with 3 doses of MeNZB.

The programme was rolled out in three phases.

Phase 1 in Counties Manukau and the Eastern corridor of Auckland only (vaccinations began in 19 July 2004 for primary care and 2nd August for schools
Phase 2, which extended the programme to greater Auckland (primary care vaccinations began on November 1 2004 in the rest of Auckland DHB, November 8, 2004 in Waitemata DHB and November 22nd in Northland DHB).
Phase 3 - The national roll out, which extended the programme to the rest of the country (primary care vaccinations began in waikato DHB on 1 February 2005; the schools programme began in Waitemata on 17 march 2005).

The evaluation is based on three case studies of programme implementation in DHBs, analysis of National Immunisation Register data and early results of a random sample of 250 General Practices.
