Summary

The Chart Book includes key indicators relating to the socioeconomic determinants of health, risk and protective factors for health, health status and health service utilisation of older people. Chapters are also included that specifically address the health of older Māori, and the health of older people in residential care.

Key findings from this report:

Older people (65+ years) had higher mortality and hospitalisation rates for most of chronic diseases, higher rates of infectious disease related mortality, and higher rates of unintentional injury mortality and hospitalisations compared to the comparison age group (50-64 years).
Older Māori had disadvantaged health status in a range of health indicators compared to their non-Māori counterparts.
Older people, particularly females, living in residential care generally rated their health poorer than those living in permanent private dwellings.
