Physical Activity

Joint Policy Statement by the Minister of Sport, Fitness and Leisure and the Minister of Health

Date of publication: April 1999

The Minister of Sport, Fitness and Leisure and the Minister of Health recognise synergies between their two portfolios and agree that a common agenda for the promotion of physical activity is important. The Ministers acknowledge that the promotion of 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on all or most days of the week is an important public health and wellbeing, particularly for people whoa re currently inactive*. The Ministers are also encouraging government and non-government agencies to work collaboratively in the promotion of physical activity and in the delivery of programmes and activities that support physical activity.

*Inactive people take part in less than 2 and a half hours leisure-time physical activity per week, and make up 36% of the adult population (Physical Activity Taskforce. 1998. Physical Activity Taskforce Report. Wellington: Hillary Commission for Sport, Fitness and Leisure.
