Problem Gambling in New Zealand

Service User Data - Intervention Client Data

The intervention client data represents the number of clients who have received problem gambling treatment services and who have identified to the service provider a primary problem gambling mode causing them significant harm.

The data available represents a snapshot at a point in time. The reported statistics are subject to slight variation as the Ministry updates client data elements in accordance with the data collection and submission rules required of treatment service providers.

* Client receiving service in previous year - a client who was receiving a service in the previous year and continued in the current year

Please note that a direct comparison between the 2006, 2007 and 2008 calendar year data has limitations for the following reasons:

  • new service specifications for problem gambling intervention service providers were implemented from January 2008
  • equivalent intervention services provided by the Gambling Helpline have been included in the data since November 2008 (16 unique clients for the period of November 2008 – March 2009).
Please note: The 2006 and 2007 problem gambling intervention service client data published on this webpage differs from that identified in the following Ministry publications.

Problem Gambling Intervention Services in New Zealand: 2006 Service-user statistics

Problem Gambling Intervention Services in New Zealand - 2007 service-user statistics.

This is due to a change by the Ministry to the definition of clients from 2008. The figures provided on this webpage for 2006 and 2007 were recalculated applying the revised data rules to enable an approximate comparison with 2008 data.

The previous 2006 and 2007 client definition excluded clients who accessed intervention services through telephone only. From 2008 clients who accessed intervention services by telephone only were included in Service User Data.
