Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand


ALAC is a statutory body with the objective of promoting moderation in the use of alcohol, the reduction and discouragement of the misuse of alcohol and the development and promotion of strategies which will reduce alcohol related harm for the nation. ALAC has the following mission statement: More Moderation Less Harm.

ALAC’s vision for the future, is of a nation that experiences no alcohol related harm; where whanau and families manage the use of alcohol in a way that ensures everyone, particularly children, and young people are kept safe. A nation where people who drink do so within safe limits; where bingeing and drunken behaviour are seen as unacceptable; and where people with alcohol problems have access to the appropriate support and treatment for themselves, their families and communities.

Under section 3A(1) of the Alcohol Advisory Council Act 1976 (the Act), ALAC’s governing Council is to consist of 8 members appointed by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Minister of Health. Members hold office for a term of three years, but from time to time may be reappointed.
