Myths about Nurse Practitioners

Becoming a Nurse Practitioner

Nurse Practitioners in New Zealand
www.moh.govt.nz/nursepractitioner

The Nurse Practitioner is a highly educated and experienced health professional working to improve health and to reduce inequalities in health. He or she is a key component of the health and disability workforce of the future, one who has the potential to improve health status and to reduce the national burden of chronic disease. Nurse Practitioners can assist in realising the NZ Disability Strategy’s vision of a non-disabling society.

Great progress has been made over the last five years in the education, training and professional development of the Nurse Practitioner. In response to the identified need to stimulate the sector to recognise the potential of the Nurse Practitioner workforce, the Nurse Practitioner Employment and Development Working Party was established by the Minister of Health in June 2005 and was disestablished on completion of its tasks in December 2006.

District Health Boards New Zealand has taken on the responsibility of promoting the Nurse Practitioner role, which District Health Boards will foster in relevant ways across the country.

For information about the Nurse Practitioner Facilitation Programme, visit the District Health Boards New Zealand's Nurse Practitioner web pages.
