Overview

A wide range of topics are included in the survey, covering health behaviours and risk factors, health conditions, health status and health service use. Data are collected face-to-face via trained interviewers in the participants’ homes. This includes an interview and measurements of height, weight and waist circumference. Best-practice survey techniques were employed throughout the survey and numerous steps taken to ensure that the data collected are as high quality and robust as possible.

The objectives of the survey are to:

  • measure the health status of New Zealanders and the prevalence of selected health conditions
  • measure the prevalence of risk and protective factors associated with these health conditions
  • measure the use of health services, including barriers to accessing health services
  • examine differences between population groups (as defined by age, gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic position)
  • monitor trends in the health status, risk and protective factors and health service use of the population over time.
